On Sunday, February 4, 2007 our members unanimously approved the following statement:
The members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Somerset Hills stand in solidarity with all couples in New Jersey seeking fair and equal treatment under our state’s civil marriage laws. As a religious community dedicated to affirming and promoting the inherent worth and dignity of every human being, we celebrate the step forward represented by the ruling in Lewis v. Harris. We rejoice that our State Legislature and Governor acted so quickly in passing a law permitting Civil Unions, to allow same-sex couples in the Garden State to enjoy the same civil rights as opposite-sex couples, and we oppose any effort to curtail these rights. At the same time, recognizing the injustice inherent in any “separate but equal” arrangement, we look forward to the day when full equality for all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, exists in the name of “marriage” as well as in civil law.
