The last Access Project Update was about six weeks ago. It’s time to bring everyone up to speed on what’s been happening with the final stages of the project as summer comes to a close.
As mentioned in the last post, the Borough of Somerville had some concerns about the exterior work of the project. We submitted the requested documentation to the Borough, and UUCSH leadership went to the Board of Adjustment meeting on August 19 to discuss their concerns. The meeting went well. We were not required to make additional changes to the windows or to the parking lot paving as had been suggested. On August 20, we picked up a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) and were given the OK to move into and use all of our new spaces. Hooray!
In those weeks since we got the TCO, the new accessible restrooms were cleared and made available for use; the photocopier was moved to its new home outside Rev. Jennifer’s office; Office Administrator Avianca Bouchedid moved into her new office ; and the new “kitchenette” area was set up. The refrigerator and cabinet are in the spot where the photocopier used to be. Big thanks to Paul S. for his quick work in getting those things moved and to Missy S. for her patience and leadership throughout.
The Borough still required revised plans and some additional fees in order to obtain our Certificate of Occupancy. We have submitted these items and are awaiting the final, final OK.
It’s been heartwarming to see people use the elevator.
After all, being accessible to those with mobility challenges was the primary and most important goal of this project!
