Many little things happened over the last week but the BIG news with the Access Project is that the elevator installation has begun! A crew arrived from the Pennsylvania elevator factory with a truckload of materials on Monday, March 30. They are constructing the elevator in its space using the materials from this week’s supply. They will return to Pennsylvania to pick up additional truckloads of materials two more times before the project is complete. It is expected to take two to three weeks to finish installing the elevator. The work will need to pass inspection before the congregation can receive a Certificate of Occupancy for the new space.
Another noticeable change this past week was that the cement was poured for sidewalks in the rear of the building. There are poles (called bollards) to prevent vehicles from parking on the sidewalk. The two bollards on the left indicate the accessible parking spaces, including a van-accessible space. Please remember that entry to the building is still only through the front doors until we obtain a Certificate of Occupancy.
Some other accessibility features were added last week including grab bars for the restrooms. The restrooms now have stall dividers and doors, toilet tissue holders, and paper towel dispensers. They are almost ready for use.
The Access Committee and other congregation leaders have been discussing how best to accommodate people using wheelchairs. By the end of the month, you will see some changes in the seating in the sanctuary. More details to come!
