For the month of August 2018, UUCSH is happy to be partnering with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in collecting greeting cards for the “STAMP OUT DESPAIR” Project.
Almost within sight of the Statue of Liberty, there are over 2000 immigrants languishing in “detention” and in our county jails. They are isolated and confined for indeterminate periods of time with severely restricted access to the outside world. A major concern for the detainees is to be in contact with family and friends. For many of these detainees even this simple pleasure is denied, since they do not have money to purchase stationery or stamps.
For the month of August, we are asking for donations of all kinds of Greeting Cards: blank, birthday, thank you, get well, & holiday/Christmas cards. They can be newly purchased or cards you may have received from a charitable organization to which you donate.
These cards will be assembled into folders with pens, Forever Stamps and handwritten notes of encouragement at noon on Sunday, September 9 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (300 Union Ave, Somerville) and delivered to First Friends of NJ & NJ for distribution to the immigrant detention centers. Any interested volunteers are invited and welcome to join in.
