Executive Board

Lexi Ryan, President

Karen Toth, Vice President

Louis Sapirman, Finance Committee Chair

Frank Hershkowitz, Treasurer

Frank was raised in West Caldwell, NJ, where much of his family still resides. He has a BS and a PhD in chemical engineering, from Cornell and Berkeley, respectively. He returned from Berkeley to New Jersey in 1980 so he could meet his wife Missy Staples, and perhaps also for a job. Frank worked for 35 years at ExxonMobil’s Corporate Strategic Research, where he specialized in creating new technology options that have higher efficiency and lower carbon footprint.

Since retiring in 2015, Frank has done some consulting, has taken on the treasury work at UUCSH and Leadership Leaves (a NJ UU organization), and has become much more deliberate with his exercise and travel regimens.  He and Missy (also retired) enjoy hiking, biking, drinking interesting beers, and eating ice cream. They have two sons: Aaron, who lives with them and works in Princeton, and David, who lives and works in Long Beach, CA.

Groups and Committees

Please contact [email protected] if you’re interested in joining one of these committees or if you’d like more information.

Adult Choir
The choir practices weekly at UUCSH and usually performs during one or more worship services each month. All are welcome! No experience or music-reading ability is necessary; just a love of singing.

Better Than Ever
This is a group for senior adults who enjoy going on local adventures together. During most months, the BTE group typically arranges a weekend day trip or outing to places such as local museums, nature centers, seasonal festivals, and more, with group members rotating coordination responsibilities each time.

Building and Grounds
This team cares for our church building (including cleaning), our grounds, and our parking lot.

Caring
This committee supports the congregation in times of need and in times of joy. Support ranges from sending kind notes to arranging for practical help such as home-cooked meals and transportation to medical appointments, and addressing other needs.

Community Plate
During every worship service and special event, we pass baskets for a free-will donation. While our building is closed, we are especially grateful for checks and electronic donations, and we currently donate 100% of these collections to social organizations both in our community and in the larger world.

Finance
The Finance Committee manages the annual pledging process (during which members of the congregation make financial pledges) and meets regularly to manage the congregational budget.

Giving Network
An all-volunteer outreach program of this congregation, which is currently helping to deliver food to families in need across Somerset County.

Green Sanctuary
This team works to minimize our congregation’s impact on our planet while promoting at-home Earth-friendly practices.

Membership
This group welcomes and helps visitors from the time a visitor first attends a service in person or virtually, and helps them become part of the UUCSH community. The team also ensures that UU Basics sessions are periodically offered, and that New Member Recognition events are conducted as appropriate.

Religious Education
This includes Coming of Age, Neighboring Faiths, Our Whole Lives (OWL), Sexuality Education, and Campus Ministry.

Service Auction
The annual UUCSH Service Auction is our largest fundraiser—with an emphasis on FUN!—typically held in the fall. Read more on this page.

Social Action
The Social Action Committee is an integral part of UUCSH’s ministry and mission. Social Action initiatives include involvement with community partners including the Feeding Hands food bank, the Giving Network, the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program, HOME of Somerset County, UU FaithAction of NJ and the Red Cross. This committee coordinates blood drives, sandwich-making events, voter awareness initiatives, vigils and rallies, group trips to march for various social justice issues, a community course on racism, and more.

Stewardship
Every pledge is vitally important. All that we do at UUCSH depends on the financial support of our members and friends through pledges made during the annual Stewardship campaign.

Ushers
Welcome congregants and visitors to worship services; Assist with listening devices in sanctuary, guide visitors to Coffee Hour following services, answer questions as needed.

Worship Associates
Worship Associates help to lead Sunday morning services, and assist the worship lead with key elements of the service.
