A passive house is a low-energy/ low-carbon intensity home mostly by nature of tight construction and high insulation values.  As a result of its inherent low energy consumption, the heating and cooling systems can be made much smaller than normal.  In this seminar, Tom Davidson, a Certified Passive House Consultant, will introduce you to the basic concepts of passive house construction, the passive house movement, and also review the technical results (including comfort levels) from instrumenting a friend’s passive house in lower New York State in the fall/ winter of 2017.  This friend’s house had 3 levels (Basement, 1st floor, 2nd floor) and was heated and cooled by a single 1-ton mini-split located on the first floor of the home.  The home also had a ventilation system that included heat recovery, and a heat-pump domestic hot water heater.
